Karolinska Institutet, the largest clinical research and education center in Europe, based in Stockholm, Sweden, and the Institute of Applied Biosciences of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas INAB/CERTH, have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen and expand their academic cooperation in research, education and innovation.
The collaboration brings together the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery (MMK) of Karolinska Institutet, represented by Professor Rebecka Hultgren, and INAB, represented by its Director Anastasia Chatzidimitriou. The agreement formalizes a broad collaboration that has developed between the two institutions over many years of joint scientific activity.
“This agreement reflects more than two decades of close collaboration in cancer research,” said Richard Rosenquist Brandell, Professor of Clinical Genetics at Karolinska Institutet. Noting that “we have been actively collaborating for the past 20 years, and we are now formalizing this collaboration to further strengthen our joint research and education efforts, with a focus on hematological malignancies.”
The collaboration is based on shared goals to advance scientific knowledge and enhance academic mobility. The key areas include:
- Cooperation in undergraduate and postgraduate education
- Exchange of academic staff and expertise
- Joint research projects and actions
- Development of initiatives in the analysis of clinical and biological data
- Creation of “living labs” with the participation of patients, clinicians, researchers and citizens
- Organization of conferences, workshops and educational programs
- Joint efforts to secure external research funding
“This agreement reflects the ever-growing international recognition of the Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB) as a center of excellence in clinical research, genomics and precision medicine,” said Ms. Anastasia Chatzidimitriou, emphasizing that “we are particularly pleased to formalize and further expand our long-standing collaboration with Karolinska Institutet with the aim of strengthening our joint research and educational activities and accelerating scientific innovation in clinical research for the benefit of patients and society.”
Mr. Stavros Kalafatis, Deputy Minister of Development, responsible for Research and Innovation, welcomed this important strategic partnership, noting that the collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and the Institute of Applied Biosciences of CERTH constitutes an essential step for further strengthening the scientific ties between Greece and Sweden. As he underlined, this specific collaboration strengthens the international presence of the Greek research community, promotes extroversion and creates new perspectives in clinical research, genomics and precision medicine. At the same time, he pointed out that this partnership contributes substantially to the further development of clinical research in the country for the benefit of science, patients and society.
