The Genomic Research Unit (GRU) applies omics technologies to support research across a spectrum ranging from basic research to shed light on the structure and function of the genome to applications research for promoting the development of innovative goods and services; to translational research to decipher the molecular bases of human diseases and healthy living; and, to clinical research to establish how to use genomic information for advancing medical care.
GRU translates its research through its accredited Molecular Diagnostics Unit. The GRU bioinformatics branch focuses on computationally intensive approaches to analyze large-scale omics data.
GRU actively collaborates with many national and international institutions to advance research in areas as diverse as health, food tracing and environmental issues. Equipped with a wide range of state-of-the-art technology platforms, GRU aims to provide comprehensive, quality and reliable services for academic and private sector scientists alike, extending from molecular and cell biology to biostatistics and bioinformatics.
The Molecular Diagnostic Unit (MDU) specializes in providing fast, accurate diagnostic services. MDU is ISO 15189-accredited and UKAS certified, meeting the highest standards in its operations. MDU also encompasses a Biobank, node of the Biobanking and BioMolecular resources Research Infrastructures (BBMRI).
MDU is constantly researching and developing new molecular diagnostic methods which can be introduced into the clinical practice. This allows us to remain ahead of the field in diagnostic testing and clinical monitoring and to provide the highest quality of patient care.
MDU works in partnership with international and national consortia dedicated to the standardization and improvement of molecular diagnostics. Relevant to mention, it serves as European Reference Lab for immunogenetic biomarkers in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
MDU is fully committed to promoting laboratory training and mentoring for students, technicians and medical residents.
Since 2023, MDU serves as Regional Laboratory of the National Organization for Public Health.
