Mrs. Melina–Maria Dermentzopoulou, Deputy Regional Governor for Health and Social Solidarity of the Region of Central Macedonia visited the Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB) at the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH). She was welcomed by Dr. Anastasia Chatzidimitriou, Director of INAB/ CERTH who briefed her on the Institute’s journey, the projects it has implemented to date, and those currently underway.
The Deputy Regional Governor was then given a tour of the facilities and laboratories of INAB/ CERTH and was informed in detail about the Institute’s activities, which are pioneering at the European level and are carried out in close collaboration with the private sector.
As highlighted during the briefing, INAB is the only Biosciences Institute in Northern Greece and the only Institute of Applied Biosciences in the country, with a portfolio that includes significant projects involving collaboration, among others, with the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry.
Mrs. Dermentzopoulou was informed about the Institute’s multi-level research work, through which it represents Greece in the European Clinical Research Infrastructure Network (ECRIN-ERIC).
Multicenter clinical studies are conducted at INAB, along with the collection, management, and analysis of data from real-world clinical practice, coordinated within the framework of major European and national networks.
The Institute’s Health Psychology team investigates the field of chronic diseases, particularly the illness experience and treatment adherence. It develops supportive care interventions aimed at improving patients’ quality of life and implements empowerment initiatives for both patients and healthcare professionals through training in self-management and communication skills.
The Deputy Regional Governor visted the Institute’s genomics analysis laboratory, where genomic surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus continues in collaboration with the National Public Health Organization (EODY). Since 2019, the laboratory has also been conducting tests to identify the genetic profile of cancer patients, contributing to improved cancer risk stratification.
At the molecular biology laboratory, Mrs. Dermentzopoulou was informed about its role as a European reference laboratory for the identification and analysis of biomarkers in lymphomas.
In addition, prospects for new forms of cooperation for the benefit of society were explored.
