PRESS RELEASE

INAB|CERTH at the forefront of modern

pharmacoepidemiological research

The participation of researchers from the eHealth Laboratory in the

6th Symposium on Pharmacoepidemiology highlighted the potential of big data, artificial intelligence, and real-world data.

The Institute of Applied Biosciences at the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (INAB|CERTH) maintained a strong scientific and organizational presence at the 6th Symposium on Pharmacoepidemiology, titled “New Technologies in Pharmacoepidemiology,” which took place from October 2 to 4, 2026, at the “G. Kyriopoulos” Amphitheatre of the School of Public Health at the University of West Attica, in Athens. The Symposium was organized by the newly established Hellenic Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ELEFEP) and served as a forum for scientific convergence and meaningful knowledge exchange among representatives from the academic and research communities, institutional bodies, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders from the pharmaceutical sector.

From Methodological Rationale to Practical Application

A key highlight of the participation by INAB|CERTH was the pre-conference workshop titled “Big Data in Healthcare,” presented by Dr. Pantelis Natsiavas, Researcher (Grade C) and Head of the eHealth Laboratory, and Dr. Alexandros Rekkas, a research associate at the Institute. This educational session bridged methodological rationale with practical application, providing a coherent overview of the design and implementation of observational studies that leverage real-world health data. In addition to the pre-conference workshop, the two researchers served as chairs and moderators for key sessions of the Symposium, including the discussion on “The Use of Big Data in Greece: Challenges and Opportunities,” the session on free communications titled “Pharmacoepidemiological Studies and Pharmaceutical Policy,” the keynote address “Pharmacoepidemiology and the DARWIN EU Network” delivered by Professor Peter Rijnbeek, and the session on “Artificial Intelligence and Pharmacoepidemiology.”

Evidence-based support for healthcare decision-making

The participation of INAB|CERTH in the 6th Symposium on Pharmacoepidemiology reaffirms the Institute’s ongoing commitment to developing advanced methods for health data analysis. By leveraging international synergies, open standards, and modern computational infrastructure, the eHealth Laboratory generates robust scientific evidence that supports safer therapeutic decisions, more effective health policies, and tangible benefits for patients.

About ELEFEP

The Hellenic Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ELEFEP) was established with the aim of fostering the development of pharmacoepidemiology in Greece and promoting evidence-based decision-making regarding the safe and effective use of medicines.
