Mr Kostas Gioutikas, the Deputy Regional Governor of the Metropolitan Unit of Thessaloniki visited the Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB) at the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH). He was welcomed by the Director of INAB/ CERTH, Dr. Anastasia Chatzidimitriou.
Mr Gioutikas was presented the Institute’s trajectory and the projects that have been or are currently implemented. He was then guided by Dr. Anastasia Chatzidimitriou into the facilities and laboratories of INAB/ CERTH and was informed by the Institute’s executives about its activities.
Specifically, the Research Director Dr. Kostas Stamatopoulos, outlined the activities carried out at INAB during the period 2013–2023, which focused on the coordination of multicenter international clinical studies and the Institute’s long-standing collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry.
The Senior Researcher Dr. Antonios Makris described the Institute’s contribution in the utilization of microorganisms and plants for the development of cost-effective production systems of products with a high added value (including pharmaceuticals). He also referred to circular economy, the use of microorganisms for biodegradation, and the exploitation of any by-products and waste.
Researcher Dr. Fotis Psomopoulos presented he capabilities of INAB’s computational infrastructure. In particular, he described the accreditations for the production and management of biodata, with special reference to pioneering research and the development of tools for the identification of coronavirus variants in wastewater.
Subsequently, Researcher Dr. Spyros Petrakis presented INAB’s new patent on two new chemical compounds that provide protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Researcher Dr. Pantelis Natsiavas referred to the activities of the e-Health laboratory implemented in collaboration with Health Regions, institutions, and major hospitals at the Region of Central Macedonia, while Collaborating Researcher Dr. Panos Madesis spoke about the traceability in livestock and agricultural production products.
