The tomato is a “functional food,” meaning its consumption goes beyond basic nutrition. It has bioactive components, which may reduce the risk of certain types of cancers. Research in genome editing created the opportunity to target specific genes involved in different molecular pathways with the aim to produce a local genetic variation that will increase the repertoire of interesting plant characteristics. As part of the CODATA-RDA Research Data Science Summer School in Trieste (6-17 Aug 2018), ELIXIR Training has contributed in the organization of the flanking Advanced Bioinformatics workshop (20-24 Aug 2018) with a particular focus on Machine Learning applications. The course was led by Fotis E. Psomopoulos, postdoctoral researcher at INAB-CERTH and deputy Training Coordinator for ELIXIR Greece, and provided an overview of the current status of different NGS workflows and combined them with the appropriate Machine Learning and Data Mining approaches.READ MORE
