Ioannis Gkekas studied Biology at the Department of Biological Applications and Technologies at the University of Ioannina. He completed his doctoral dissertation at the School of Pharmacy of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki under the supervision of Dr. Konstantinos Xanthopoulos, focusing on the study of the aggregation mechanism of the pathological protein ataxin-1 and potential pharmacological inhibition approaches. His research interests are focused on: 1) the identification of molecular pathogenic mechanisms related to neurodegenerative diseases, 2) the generation of cellular models for neurodegenerative diseases, and 3) the development and application of various compound screening methods in cellular bioassays.
